Shanahan's founding

"Shanahan’s" was founded by Gary Shanahan in 1990.

Operating initially through word of mouth and recommendations and then larger civil engineering works and local authority contracts.

Gary kept being asked about drain inspection and cleaning so he bought an old diesel hand crank start jetting unit and a very early drain CCTV system and spent many hours in his house learning how to work it.

It soon became obvious that a tanker was needed and from that moment a diverse service, it expanded to become one of the best known, family-run civils and waste disposal companies in the South East region.

Early growth

With such success and with the need to build a bigger team, in 2011 Gary decided to incorporate the company as Shanahan Contractors Ltd and run it with the help of his sister, Debbie.

We quickly expanded to become one of the best known, family-run liquid waste disposal companies in the South East region.

Gary had won the septic tank emptying contract for Affinity Water and was doing an outstanding job of making the company a success. A few years in though and it was time to think about stepping back. 

When Gary met Tom...

When working for Affinity Water, Gary met Tom Williams and his team at Maydencroft and in February 2018, the business was bought by Tom as part of Maydencroft's expanding portfolio.

Shanahan Contractors became Shanahan Contracting, Gary is still retained as a consultant, with Debbie doing an amazing job taking over the day-to-day operations for 2 years.

A new leaf

Now under the management of James Shakespeare, who learned all he knows from Debbie and with Gary and Debbie still to hand whenever needed, it’s as much the family-run feel now as when we started.

With our contract with Affinity Water renewed for another 5 years, multiple local authority contracts, a large portfolio of domestic clients, being part of the Maydencroft family, a huge investment made in new equipment and some of the most highly skilled operators in the industry, the future for “Shanahan’s” is a bright one.
